Post from the Office for Nuclear Development

Please see below numerous updates from the Office for Nuclear Development, DECC:
1.      Today the UK Government has published a renewed process for siting a Geological Disposal Facility.
Implementing Geological Disposal outlines an approach based on working with interested communities, beginning with two years of actions overseen by Government and intended to address issues that the public and stakeholders have told us are important to them.
The UK Government remains committed to geological disposal as the right policy for the long-term, safe and secure management of higher activity radioactive waste.
Along with this we have also published the Implementing Geological Disposal: Annual Report for April 2013 – March 2014: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/implementing-geological-disposal-annual-report-april-2013-march-2014
2.      The Office for Nuclear Development has today published a consultation seeking views on the Secretary of State’s proposed decision to Justify the UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (UK ABWR) designed by Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, Ltd.  The consultation has two volumes,  Volume 1 summarises the purpose of the consultation and provides guidance on how to respond. Volume 2 sets out the background to Regulatory Justification and the evidence the Secretary of State has taken into account in coming to his proposed decision.
3.      Today the Scottish Government, on behalf of DECC and the Devolved Administrations for Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, is publishing the first UK strategy for Low Level Radioactive Waste from Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials. The strategy can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/strategy-for-the-management-of-naturally-occurring-radioactive-material-norm-waste-in-the-united-kingdom
Kind regards,
The Office for Nuclear Development

Consultation Meetings - Wylfa Neuedd and Rhyd-y-Groes Wind Farm - June 2014

Two more sets of consultation meetings this week.

Horizon Nuclear Power are holding one of their regular Open Surgeries at Cemaes Village Hall on Monday 16 June between 1pm and 7pm

TPG WIND are holding a public exhibition on 17 June at Llanfechell School Community Centre on Tuesday 17 June 6.30pm to 8.30pm. THis is about the Rhyd-yGroes Wind farm where TPG WIND ( joint venture between E.ON and Eurus Energu UK Ltd plan "to repower the wind farm to make use of more efficient and economic turbines". The plans will reduce the number of turbines from 24 to 13 whilst also increasing the possible power output from 7.2MW to 11.7MW. There will be a Community Benefit Fund contributing about £46,000 per year - £4,000 per MW of installed capacity (the figure quoted is for 13 turbines - funds would reduce if fewer turbines were erected).

Marton Fabok wants to Hear from U

PhD student, Marton Fabok wants to hear from people in the area about how they feel about the local nuclear power station at Wylfa.
What are your perspectives on the nuclear plant and what kind of future the ne plant means for teh people of Anglesey and Cemaes in particular. We hants to hear from a diverse selection of people; old Cemaes families and new incomers; supporters and sceptics.
Contact him on marton.fabok@liverpool.ac.uk or mobile 07805148057.
Notice he talks about 'the new station' and not the 'proposed new station'.
The environmental surveys are still underway, as are the geology studies, the public consultation phase has not yet started and the plant has no operational license in the UK nor has a planning application been approved. Not sure an economic model for construction or operation has even been demonstration yet.
